Online casino players win £1.7 million in prizes

The same is true of Mr Andy Green, who recently won a £1.7 million prize. But this was after a tense three-year legal battle with Betfred to claim the prize. So what exactly is going on in this unique situation that could have a negative impact on the bookies? Read carefully to find out!

Where to start

It all started in January 2018, when 53-year-old mobile casino player Andy Green said he won £1.7 million playing Betfred Frankie Dettori’s Magic Seven. However, Betfred was not rewarded for what it claimed was a minor software error, and the bookmaker’s terms and conditions said it could withhold the money. The company’s terms and conditions say that the money can be withheld. Well, that’s a flimsy excuse!

Not surprisingly, Andy Green took the case to the High Court. His lawyers claimed that their client had not been given any evidence of the above error. Interestingly, the online casino credited Mr Andy’s account with £1,722,923.54, which he was unable to withdraw. Fortunately, Andy placed multiple bets and then took a screenshot of the winnings.

In a new twist to the story, Betfred offered to pay Mr. Green £30,000 for his goodwill on the condition that he would not talk about the story again. He refused the offer, which was later increased to £60,000 by the company. In April 2019, Mr. Greene filed a lawsuit in the High Court seeking £2 million in damages from the company, including the benefit of a bonus.

The long wait is finally over

After a long and tiring litigation, the champagne will finally go to the 54-year-old boatman from Lincolnshire. The High Court ruled on 7 April 2021 that Mr Green would now receive his £17 million prize plus interest after finding that one of Betfred’s Terms and Conditions in the case did not cover the circumstances.

According to Betfred’s lawyers, the bookmaker was not responsible for distributing the winnings to Mr. Greene after discovering a flaw in the game, which cost him a large sum of money beyond his expectations. They claim that bettors won the jackpot three times while playing a game offered by one of their third-party partners. The lawyers added that their supplier had informed them of the problem and advised them to withhold the winnings accumulated in the games.

However, Judge Ms. Foster ruled in favor of the complainant, saying that the T&C clause relied on by Betfred was inadequately worded. She claimed that the clause was opaque and that the company could not rely on it in the case.

Surprisingly, Betfred will not appeal the High Court’s decision. As if that wasn’t enough, the company apologized to Mr. Green for delaying his winnings. As for the winner, he was disappointed with the company and challenged other bettors who had been cheated by the bookmaker to sue them.

What is Betfred going to do next?

Clearly, this ruling means that bookmakers will lose a significant portion of their online customer base. When looking for the ideal gambling site, players must ensure that their winnings are guaranteed. Although players can quickly identify a reliable casino by checking the rules, this is not always the case with Betfred. For this reason, it is important to carefully browse the T&Cs of online casinos and read reviews from multiple online players before registering. As for Betfred, damage may take a considerable amount of time to repair. Play safe!
