When you are playing, what could be better than winning? Of course, for most players, winning is the ultimate goal. But winning is not the most important goal for every player.
Here is a list of six times when winning is not your best goal when gaming. The good news is that in some cases, you will eventually win anyway. So pay close attention to the fifth reason.
If you are not in one of the six situations listed in this article, do everything you can to win. But don’t make the same mistakes many players make and end up losing too much money by chasing profits.
1 – When you have a time limit
I used to spend almost two hours on the road, one way, to go to the nearest entertainment city. With a four-hour round trip, I always have a time limit to get to the casino. Of course, I don’t want to be on a time limit when I’m gaming, but I have to leave early so I can get home and get ready for the next day’s sleep.
I’m not saying that you don’t want to win, or even that you shouldn’t try to win. But since the gaming time is so short, you may want to focus on maximizing your entertainment value.
For example, you can get a lower house edge in blackjack than in craps, but if you like to play craps and you will only be in the casino for a few hours, the expected loss in craps is not much higher than in blackjack.
With over 1,000 hours of play, you can get better results when playing blackjack. But in a short time you should have as much fun as possible.
2 – When you want to maximize your gaming time
In Part 1, you saw that sometimes it is better to have as much fun as possible rather than focusing on winning. But what if you have as much time to gamble as possible, but have to worry about whether your money will last as long as possible?
Sure, if you win, your money will last as long as you need it, but are you winning because you have an advantage or because you’re lucky?
I will discuss games with a long term advantage in part 5 of this article, but if you rely on luck to win, you need a better plan to maximize the time you can play.
Instead of getting lucky and winning, you need to find a combination of low betting costs and low total risk per hour. For example, you can play video poker machines in 1/4 hands and have full control over how fast you play.
Or, you can play online baccarat or blackjack for $1 per hand, and you can still control how fast or slow you play.
Winning is not always the best goal when trying to make your money last as long as possible.
3 – When you try to maximize Comps
As I discussed in the previous section, if you can figure out how to play with a long-term advantage, then you can maximize your winnings as much as possible because you don’t have to worry about running out of money.
But over time, most players lose a little more than they win, so if you can learn how to maximize your winnings, you at least have a chance of getting some good returns.
If you are not playing to your advantage, then the best way to maximize your portfolio is to find the bets with the lowest casino edge and bet as much as you can when you have to.
You can also earn big bonuses by playing slots, but the casino advantage of slots is very high. Therefore, if you prefer to play on machines, video poker is a better option.
4 – Fund Preservation
The best way to save your money, much like some of the other things covered in this article, is also the best way to maximize your gaming time.
If you want to keep your money, you need to bet the minimum amount every hour while betting with the lowest casino edge you can find. Another way to preserve your money is to bet with a zero casino edge or play with an edge. I will go over these options in detail in the next section.
Over the years, I have used many different combinations to save my money and I will tell you my favorite one. But this is not the only possibility, so you can find other effective combinations.
I play Jacks or Better video poker on a coin machine. I play online most of the time because it’s easy to find nickel machines that also use the 9/6 payout table.
I use strategy cards and either use bonuses while playing or play games where I am rewarded. I also try to keep the number of hands played per hour to 200 or less.
Using this method, I can play for hours with relatively little money.
5 – Play with positive expectations
If you gamble with positive expectations, then it doesn’t matter if you win or lose now. Winning players know how to put themselves in a position of positive expectation and they know that if they continue to do so, they will win.
The problem is that even if you bet with positive expectations, it doesn’t mean you win every time.
For example, if you bet $25 at 1-to-1 odds and have a 60% chance of winning, you will win if you can reverse the bet. But you will still lose 40% of the time. So, in other words, every time you make this bet, you have a 60% chance of winning and a 40% chance of losing.
You must learn the right strategy and tactics for each of these games, but gamblers will use each of these games to make bets with positive expectations. The secret is to understand exactly how these winning players play these games and to do exactly the same thing as the winning players.
6 – Enter money
The last reason why winning is not always the best strategy is when you play poker tournaments. When I play poker tournaments, I always play to win. But sometimes, the best way to play is to put money on the table.
For example, you are playing in a poker tournament and three other players have to play to get you to win. You have an even stack, so all you have to do is fold until you get into the money.
Most of the time, you want to go all-in with a pair of kings. But if you go all-in and lose the hand, you’re out of the game with no money.
If your goal is to win the tournament, the right way to play is to go all-in with the King. Doubling your chips will help you win. But if you can’t leave the tournament without making a little money, you have to fold.
Once you make money, you can start playing to win again.
Final thoughts on these gaming techniques
Winning is always the highest ranked player in the target division, but in a few cases winning is a secondary goal.
If you learn how to play with positive expectations, whether you win or lose now, you know you’ll win in the long run. However, if you are playing in a poker tournament, sometimes you have to decide whether to maximize your chances of winning or maximizing your chances of winning the prize money.
Sometimes it is more important to protect your money or maximize your winnings or gambling time. Most of the time, winning may be your primary goal, but don’t let it blind you to other situations.
