James Bond's favorite casino games

James Bond is known for many things. From his stylish Aston Martin to his many gadgets, he is the quintessential gentleman spy. One place where we always see him in high profile is the casino. He’s no stranger to a casino game or two – but what’s his favorite? Let’s take a closer look at some of the games we often see him playing in the movies and in Ian Fleming’s original novels.

Baccarat

The game most often associated with Bond is baccarat or chemin de fer. This is his game of choice, which appears in many movies and books. This elegant card game dates back centuries and has remained popular and popular for many years. It was a very popular game when Fleming was writing his novels, so it’s no surprise that he let Bond play it.

Most famously, we introduced Bond playing chemin de fer in the first film Dr. No. This game is slightly different than the standard baccarat. One player is the banker, and as things continue, the character moves counterclockwise. As with other variations of baccarat, the player tries to get close to eight or nine to win. Since chemin de fer is often played in its native French, it is no wonder that Fleming thought this should be the signature game for his international characters.

Roulette

Roulette is an interesting social game that always attracts people’s attention. You can find it in many physical casinos, as well as on numerous websites. It may not be as popular with Bond as baccarat, but he can be seen playing it in several instances. In particular, he can be seen trying his hand at roulette in Diamonds are Forever (Golden Steel Diamonds).

This is one of the most iconic games in the casino and can always be spotted thanks to its reels and easily identifiable betting board. Players guess which pocket the ball will fall into when it is introduced to the spinning wheel. Bets can be as simple as black or red pockets, odd or even numbers, or as detailed as guessing exactly which number the ball will land on. While Roulette may not be the game you immediately consider when you think of Bond, it doesn’t stop with the development of the roulette strategy that bears his name!

Citi Dice is another game that always draws a crowd. Instead of using cards like many of the others on this list, it uses dice. Players place bets on what they think the outcome of a dice roll might be, and then roll the dice to see if their predictions come true. This game was another one that Bond tried in Golden Steel Diamond, where he met Bond girl Plenty O’Toole.

This can be a fast paced game and can be difficult to get started if you want to learn at the table. If you are interested in learning more about how to play dice toss, it is best to check them out on the website first. In a closed game where it is just you and the game, you may be more comfortable learning some of the strategies available rather than just diving in. This can be a much calmer experience at a crowded casino table compared to what you might find when rolling the dice.

Texas Hold’em

We don’t often see Bond playing poker, but Texas Hold ‘Em is used as a great alternative to Casino Royale. In Fleming’s original novel, Bond and Le Chiffre duked it out in a game that was a favorite of 007. In adapting the story of Daniel Craig, who took over as Bond, it was decided to use poker instead, as it was a very popular game during the film’s production.

Poker is easier to play than you might think. In Texas Hold’em, you receive two cards and try to make the best hand by dealing five common cards on the table. It is a very delicate game that can be intense and thrilling. There is no doubt that when we entered the new era of Bond, we decided to switch from Baccarat to Texas Hold’em!

Blackjack

Blackjack is a game that we rarely see James Bond play, but we do see 007 play this card game from time to time. In License to Kill, Timothy Dalton’s Bond sits down to play blackjack. As one of the most popular games in many casinos, it would be a bit strange to see him not take up the challenge at some point.

Although there are many strategies you can learn if you want to take the game more seriously, the gameplay is simple. You and the dealer will each be dealt two cards. Then, you can choose to deal more cards to get closer to 21 without exceeding it. To win, you need to get close to 21 while beating the dealer’s hand! It’s a favorite of many players, and can be a social game or something you sit down and play quietly – it’s up to you!

What will we see 007 play next?

Daniel Craig has ended his tenure as Bond, which means we’re waiting with baited breath to see who the next 007 will be. Craig’s Bond has not spent much time in casinos other than the Casino Royale. So it’s nice to see the next Bond go to the casino a few more times. Is it really Bond to not play baccarat? Even the scenes introducing the new Bond at the baccarat table could be a perfect callback to the previous films.
